Chimney liner

Regulations Part J. See our guide on what Building

here.

The
Basics
- Always work safely
and in accordance with current health and safety
requirements.
- Take sensible
precautions when working at high levels by using
scaffolding, access tower etc and always wear suitable
protective clothing.
- The ends of
chimney liners are sharp - wear gloves.
- Soot is acidic and
can irritate you skin, eyes and lungs - wear a dust mask and
goggles.
Survey
& Preparation Work
- Sweep the chimney thoroughly
to remove all soot deposits, tar and deposits - otherwise
these can corrode the chimney liner once fitted.
- Check that the
chimney is structurally sound and that all external surfaces
are wind and watertight. The structure should be constructed
of solid masonry of at least 100mm (4") thickness.
- Remove the chimney
pot, any damper plates, or other obstructions that will
hinder the installation of the chimney liner. If there are bends or
obstructions in the length of the flue the wall will require
opening to ensure proper access and installation.
- Determine the
correct diameter of chimney liner required for the
application.
- Draw a sample 1
metre length of the correct diameter liner through the
chimney to ensure that it will pass through any restrictions
and changes of direction.
- Use only a single
length of chimney liner - not short lengths jointed
together.
Installation
and Connection
- If the flue liner
has direction arrows, then take notice of them. It
is important that the flue liner should be installed so that the
arrows point up the chimney. This will allow any
condensation to drain downwards over the internal joint. Not
all gas / oil flue liners have arrows, however. Where there
are no arrows, the flue liner can be installed either way
up.
- Attach a nose cone
with a draw rope to what will be the bottom end of the
chimney liner.
- Installation is a
job for two.
- First installer
drops the draw rope down the flue.
- Second installer
takes the rope at the bottom of the chimney and carefully
pulls the chimney liner downwards whilst......
- the first
installer guides the chimney liner over the top of the chimney and
into the flue, taking care to avoid letting the chimney liner bend
too sharply (i.e. less than three times the diameter of the
chimney liner) or scrape over any sharp corner etc.
- Once the chimney liner is
pulled all the way through the flue, connect the base of the
chimney liner to the appropriate adaptor using stainless steel self
tapping screws and seal with fire cement or Fortafix
Ceramix.
- Fit the clamp plate.
- Flaunch with a
suitable mortar or fit a suitable chimney pot.
