Insulating Chimney Liner Installations
There are many differing opinions regarding the use of insulation with chimney liner installations. Some insist on it, others insist on not using it.

In our experience, the majority of installations do not need additional insulation. The air between the liner the the stack warms and act as insulation itself.

We recommend only using additional insulation where the stack is either very high, very large or external in an extremely exposed position.

Micafil - Description and Usage

Micafil Insulation

Micafil is a lightweight expanded mineral. It is fireproof, fibre free and safe. Typical uses include loft insulation, internal cavity fill, garden use and packaging of liquid and hazardous goods. Micafil mixes with cement to form lightweight concrete - ideal for insulated floors screeds and filling around chimney flues and boilers. It may also be used with gypsum to produce a backing plaster.

Loft Insulation
Poured straight from the bag, Micafil simply flows into and over all potential loss areas covering the whole loft floor with a continuous heat trapping carpet of insulation. Micafil can be laid over existing insulation where it seal and covers to any depth. 10 bags will cover 10m² to a depth of 100mm

Internal Cavity Fill
Use Micafil within dry cavities to improve thermal and sound insulation.

Used as an aggregate with Portland cement, Micafil forms an ultra lightweight concrete suitable for many non structural applications. Mix 1 bag Micafil with 1 bag cement dry before sprinkling over 23 litres of water whilst mixing.

Floor and Roof Screeds
Micafil concrete can be laid over many sub-bases to provide an insulated and resilient floor. It may be used to advantage over suspended floors, for infill to accommodate different levels, or where fire resistance is important. Always use a protective topping when used for floors.

Firebacks and Chimney Linings
Micafil concrete is ideal as filler to insulate around flue linings, behind firebacks and around pipes when fitting heaters. Use also to fill between brickwork flue and lining.

Home and Garden
Mix Micafil, 1:4 with compost to improve water holding of hanging baskets and patio tubs. Use Micafil to store fruit, bulbs and tubers. Micafil is an ideal barbeque base - it insulates, reflects heat and absorbs fat.

Industrial Packaging
Use Micafil as the filler around hazardous goods in approved box systems. Highly absorbent fireproof and inert, any spillage is quickly absorbed by Micafil, thus retaining liquid within the inner container.

Chimney Liner Insulation Jackets

Chimney Liner Insulation Jacket

Liner insulation jackets are used as an alternative to Micafil for insulating multi fuel liners. They are manufactured from non combustible Rockwool and are sold in 1 metre lengths. The insulation thickness is 30mm and joints and seams need to be sealed using 75mm wide aluminium foil tape.

Liner insulation jackets are particularly suited for use in large stacks where the volume of Micafil required would be prohibitive.
