Multi Fuel Chimney Liner Price Changes

We have adjusted our pricing for all grades of multi fuel chimney liner.

For a while now, we have been selling our multi fuel chimney liner, particularly in the the smaller diameters, with next to no margin for ourselves. This has been partly in response to online competitors, who were pushing prices lower and lower. Multi fuel chimney liner is a highly price sensitive product.

Recently however, we have seen competitors increase their prices to more rational levels, and we have therefore adjusted our prices accordingly. Retail customers can view our new prices here. Trade customers will need to log into their trade account to view prices.

Of all the products that we sell, chimney liner is the one where prices move the most often, either through changes in raw material cost, or in reaction to competition in the marketplace. It would be lovely to be able to say that we expect them to stabilise where they are, but if the past is anything to go by, we'll continue to see prices for chimney liner jumping around in the future. What we can say is that we'll keep margins tight, and react where necessary to competitors.

Maxi Suspending Cowls in Stock

The Maxi Suspending Cowls, which we originally posted about here, have now arrived into stock and are available to order online in diameters 125mm (5") to 200mm (8"). Select the diameter you require from this link.

If you have 2 chimney stacks, one with a flexible liner (say for a wood burning stove), and the other without a chimney liner, you can now have matching chimney cowls. You would use a Maxi Suspending Cowl (above) for the chimney liner installation and a Maxi Cowl for the other chimney.

Did you know that we can also get any of our chimney cowls (including the revolving chimney cowls) coloured to any RAL colour you require ? If you would like a price, please email the cowl you require and the colour, and we'll get back to you. It usually takes no more than a couple of days to get cowls sprayed.

New Chimney Cowls Coming Soon

We had a preview of a couple of new chimney cowls today. They are called Maxi cowls, and will be available in 2 versions as follows:-

Maxi Cowl:- This static anti downdraught cowl has been designed to give ultimate protection from the elements, keeping even driving rain out of the chimney stack. It is anti downdraught and suitable for use with solid fuel and oil fired appliances. It would also be a good choice for disused chimney stacks. It is aluminium in construction and coated in a highly resistant paint finish. It's shown here on the sample in black, but we'll be offering it in a brown finish.

Maxi Suspending Cowl:- Designed for chimney liner installations, the Maxi Suspending Cowl has all the features of the Maxi Cowl with the addition of a stainless steel bottom section which enables the liner to be attached to the cowl and the cowl to be attached to the chimney pot.

There will then be three versions of suspending cowl, so it's a good idea to look at when to use each version:-

The Suspending Cowl:- Unlike many competing products online, our suspending cowl is all stainless steel in construction, and is suitable for most chimney liner installations. Can be used with all solid fuels, including smokeless fuels, and also on installations that are allowed to slumber overnight. Use with 316 and 904 grade chimney liner installations.

The Maxi Suspending Cowl:- Offers excellent anti downdraught properties, and superb protection from driving rain. Stainless steel base section with aluminium top section. Can be use with all solid fuels, including smokeless fuels. Use on exposed installations where rain protection is a priority. Use with 316 and 904 grade chimney liner installations.

Anti Downdraught Suspending Cowl:- The ultimate in suspending cowls. This model offers the best anti downdraught properties and, unlike many competing products online, is all stainless steel in construction. Can be use with all solid fuels, including smokeless fuels, and also on installations that are allowed to slumber overnight. Use with 316 and 904 grade chimney liner installations.

Click here and select the diameter required to order online. We'll post again when the new Maxi cowls are available from stock.

New chimney liner components

We have a brand new component available for multi fuel chimney liner installations, the register plate adaptor. This adaptor can be used in place of the adaptor liner to pipe. New multi fuel chimney liner available

We have implemented the price increase on 904 grade multi fuel chimney liner that we reported here. It's a large increase unfortunately as the cost of raw material has increased dramatically.

To complete the options on multi fuel chimney liner, we have introduced a multi fuel liner with a 904 grade stainless steel inner and a 316 grade stainless steel outer. This is the most economical liner for use with smokeless fuels and carries a 20 year replacement of product guarantee (subject to conditions). It comes in at about the same price that our 904/904 grade liner was before the increase.

Please be aware that most of our competitors are actually selling 904/316 grade liner as their 904 grade liner, so please make sure when price checking that you are comparing similar products. We'll match any competitors price on all grades and combinations of multi fuel liner. Click here to view prices.

Beat the increase on 904 grade liner

We have been selling masses of 904 grade chimney liner. Not surprising when you compare our prices to the competition, and allow for the fact that our 904 grade multi fuel chimney liner is 904 grade on the inner and the outer. Most competitors offer 904 liner with a cheaper 316 grade stainless steel outer.

As a direct result, existing stocks of 904 grade stainless steel have been used, and our manufacturers are now using the next batch of raw material, which comes in at a more expensive price. We posted to this effect here. We will therefore be increasing costs for 904 grade liner as from 1st November 2007.

Multi fuel chimney liner prices held

Following a trip to our chimney liner suppliers and some renegotiation on costs, we are pleased to say that the multi fuel chimney liner price increase that we announced here will now not happen.

It's worth a mention as to why chimney liner prices fluctuate. When purchasing stainless steel, there is the cost of the steel plus a nickel surcharge. This nickel surcharge varies considerably. On top of this, steel needs to be ordered well in advance, making it difficult for manufacturers to keep prices stable.

We currently now expect 316 grade multi fuel chimney liner prices to remain stable for 2-3 months. Once current stocks of 904 grade stainless steel have been used, it looks like an increase may be inevitable. As you can gather however, none of this is set in stone.

More importantly than costs, however, will be the ability of the manufacturers to keep up with demand during the busy heating season.

No such thing as cheap chimney liner

Multi fuel chimney liner

So often we get calls and emails from customers stating that they have been quoted extortionate amounts for their multi fuel chimney liner. They claim that our (and other online retailers) liner must be inferior in some way to that which they have been quoted. Well it's time to dispel the myth altogether.

There are actually very few different manufacturers/importers of multi fuel chimney liner in the UK, 11 as I write this. In order for a multi fuel chimney liner to be sold legally in the UK, it must be listed in the HETAS official guide. Multi fuel flexible chimney liner is in Part 3 Section E of this guide. You can look yourself from the link.

In the last 15 years, we have sold 5 of these manufacturers/importers multi fuel chimney liners, and for the last 3 years, exclusively Docherty Fire Flexmaster. We now sell something over £500,000 each year in liner alone, so we know our liner !

Note:-
We have noticed some online retailers not stating the manufacturer of their liner. We would advise customers to confirm that their liner is listed in the HETAS official guide and which manufacturer it is before purchasing.

Why so cheap online
Well it's true to say that online retailers, through competition, have pushed multi fuel chimney liner prices down to a base level below which any distributor would be losing money, even us. So we can say that liner is great value online for the consumer. It only works for online retailers when the volumes of liner, and the profit on components, are factored in.

Why so expensive from fireplace shops
There are too many fireplace shops who are still living in the past (chimney liner used to be very expensive) and quoting £60-£90/metre for 150mm (6") diameter multi fuel chimney liner. There is no question that they are paying something under £16.00/metre (if not, then come to us !), so you can work the margins out for yourselves. If a fireplace shop is installing the liner for you, then this is a different situation altogether, and they should expect to make some margin on the materials as well as the installation costs, although charging something like £30-£40/metre would be more reasonable.

Where to Purchase
Liner and components can be purchased from the multi fuel chimney liner section online. Select the liner diameter here.

Chimney liner suspending cowls

Thank goodness for the new range of chimney liner suspending cowls ! Previously, when installing a chimney liner, the installer had to remove the chimney pot (often cracking or breaking it at the time), and install the liner at the top of the stack with the traditional closure plate, top clamp and top sleeve. Then he had to bed the chimney pot back into place and attach a chimney cowl on top. No fun in the wind at height !

But now there is no need for the plate, clamp, top sleeve or a chimney cowl in many installations. The installer can often now use a single component, the suspending cowl. Each suspending cowl has 2 sets of fixings. The inner set attach the chimney liner to the cowl, and the outer set attach the cowl to the chimney pot. It makes the installation a lot easier and quicker, and avoids replacing clay chimney pots. There are 2 models of suspending cowl available as follows:-

Anti Downdraught Suspending Cowl

The anti downdraught suspending cowl is the ultimate in suspending cowls, designed by us in connection with one of the leading chimney cowl manufacturers. They are all stainless steel, including the mesh, fixing straps and strap bands, so you can fit it and forget it. Available either with natural stainless steel finish or brown finish as shown. As well as preventing downdraught, you can also see from the images that these suspending cowls offer great protection from rain entering the chimney stack.

Suspending Cowl

The suspending cowl is also an all stainless steel construction. This model does not have anti downdraught properties, and will allow more rain into the chimney stack. It is also available in either natural stainless steel finish or brown finish as shown.

Fitting a chimney liner using a suspending cowl

The liner is installed by dropping it down through the chimney pot. The sleeve at the base of the suspending cowl slides inside the liner and incorporates straps for attaching the liner to the cowl. The cowl is then pushed onto the top of the chimney pot, and there is another set of straps on the suspending cowl for attaching the cowl to the pot.

Expensive ?
Initially the chimney liner suspending cowls look quite expensive. However, when you take into consideration the expense of doing the installation the traditional way, then they soon turn out to be excellent value. They are also of a really solid construction. A top quality product.

Competing Products
Check the images carefully online for seemingly equivalent products from competitors. You'll note the quality differences just from the images. Some don't even have a stainless steel mesh. An ordinary steel mesh with rot very quickly when used with a solid fuel appliance.

Where to Purchase
These can be purchased from the multi fuel chimney liner section online. Select the liner diameter here.
