Maxi Suspending Cowls in Stock

The Maxi Suspending Cowls, which we originally posted about here, have now arrived into stock and are available to order online in diameters 125mm (5") to 200mm (8"). Select the diameter you require from this link.

If you have 2 chimney stacks, one with a flexible liner (say for a wood burning stove), and the other without a chimney liner, you can now have matching chimney cowls. You would use a Maxi Suspending Cowl (above) for the chimney liner installation and a Maxi Cowl for the other chimney.

Did you know that we can also get any of our chimney cowls (including the revolving chimney cowls) coloured to any RAL colour you require ? If you would like a price, please email the cowl you require and the colour, and we'll get back to you. It usually takes no more than a couple of days to get cowls sprayed.

New Chimney Cowls Coming Soon

We had a preview of a couple of new chimney cowls today. They are called Maxi cowls, and will be available in 2 versions as follows:-

Maxi Cowl:- This static anti downdraught cowl has been designed to give ultimate protection from the elements, keeping even driving rain out of the chimney stack. It is anti downdraught and suitable for use with solid fuel and oil fired appliances. It would also be a good choice for disused chimney stacks. It is aluminium in construction and coated in a highly resistant paint finish. It's shown here on the sample in black, but we'll be offering it in a brown finish.

Maxi Suspending Cowl:- Designed for chimney liner installations, the Maxi Suspending Cowl has all the features of the Maxi Cowl with the addition of a stainless steel bottom section which enables the liner to be attached to the cowl and the cowl to be attached to the chimney pot.

There will then be three versions of suspending cowl, so it's a good idea to look at when to use each version:-

The Suspending Cowl:- Unlike many competing products online, our suspending cowl is all stainless steel in construction, and is suitable for most chimney liner installations. Can be used with all solid fuels, including smokeless fuels, and also on installations that are allowed to slumber overnight. Use with 316 and 904 grade chimney liner installations.

The Maxi Suspending Cowl:- Offers excellent anti downdraught properties, and superb protection from driving rain. Stainless steel base section with aluminium top section. Can be use with all solid fuels, including smokeless fuels. Use on exposed installations where rain protection is a priority. Use with 316 and 904 grade chimney liner installations.

Anti Downdraught Suspending Cowl:- The ultimate in suspending cowls. This model offers the best anti downdraught properties and, unlike many competing products online, is all stainless steel in construction. Can be use with all solid fuels, including smokeless fuels, and also on installations that are allowed to slumber overnight. Use with 316 and 904 grade chimney liner installations.

Click here and select the diameter required to order online. We'll post again when the new Maxi cowls are available from stock.

Rotorvent Turbolite Available to Order

The long awaited Rotorvent Turbolite, which we originally posted about here, is about to arrive into the country, and is available to pre-order online.

The Rotorvent Turbolite is a brand new addition to the Rotorvent range. The new revolving cowl is lighter, more aerodynamic, more efficient and now comes with an additional strap fixing kit included.

The same high specifications that have made the original Rotorvent such a popular product are included in this product as standard. Fins are made from stainless steel, and the same fin fixing method which has been tried and tested for many years is still utilised.

The main benefits of the Rotorvent Turbolite can be seen on the base of the product. The base is made from pressure die cast aluminium affording a strong and durable finish. The base is 30% lighter than the original Rotorvent whilst maintaining its strength. The rounder, thinner and more aerodynamically designed legs help achieve a greater flow of gasses through a larger area making the performance altogether superior. Tests indicate that the Turbolite provides even better performance than the original Rotorvent. The fact that the model is lighter also makes it more suitable for installation on top of flue systems and methane vents as well as the traditional chimney pot.

Above all these benefits the Turbolite comes complete with 2 fixing methods. The time honoured hook bolt is still the preferred method of fixing Rotorvents but included with the Turbolite is a strap fixing kit. Hook bolts can be tightened in the same way but there is now the option of the strap fixing kit as well for extra security in areas of the country with very high wind speeds. The legs simply attach underneath the wing nut, drop down the outside of the chimney pot of flue where the jubilee clip is then fastened (see image above).

Imported Decorative Chimney Birdguards Back in Stock

We have today received our shipment from India of the Decorative Chimney Birdguard, in both brown and black colour.

We are aware that most customers prefer this model to the UK manufactured product. The imported model has the wire rods welded to a top ring, which makes for a much neater finish. The loop is then welded onto the top ring. We do have both versions in stock, so if you do have a preference, please let us know when ordering. Order online here.

The New Rotorvent Turbolite

We have had some more news on the new Rotorvent which we last mentioned here.

The new improved Rotorvent is to be called the Rotorvent Turbolite, and is set to come complete with a strap fixing kit as standard. Prices will be higher than the existing large Rotorvent, but not when you include the cost of the optional strap fixing kit (an additional cost on the existing model).

The new Rotorvent Turbolite is not set to replace the existing model however, and will be sold alongside it. The new model is on its way across the water and current estimates are for arrival in the 3rd or 4th week of February. We'll post of any changes between now and then.

Brand new Rotorvent

We had a visit from Colt Cowls today. They came to give us a preview of a brand new Rotorvent.

The new Rotorvent will be 30% lighter, and also offer increased airflow. This has been achieved by redesigning the base, making it less restrictive to airflow. The internal supports on the underside of the base will be narrower, without the channels which you can see on the existing Rotorvent above. The supports are also rounded to resist the build up of deposits.

Unfortunately, it was whisked away from us before we could take any pictures. First impressions however, are good. The new Rotorvent will be sold in addition to the existing one. There is talk of including a strap fixing kit as standard (it's a recommended addition on the existing one). Prices are expected to be higher for this new model, although not much. Availability is expected around the end of November.

Chimney liner suspending cowls

Thank goodness for the new range of chimney liner suspending cowls ! Previously, when installing a chimney liner, the installer had to remove the chimney pot (often cracking or breaking it at the time), and install the liner at the top of the stack with the traditional closure plate, top clamp and top sleeve. Then he had to bed the chimney pot back into place and attach a chimney cowl on top. No fun in the wind at height !

But now there is no need for the plate, clamp, top sleeve or a chimney cowl in many installations. The installer can often now use a single component, the suspending cowl. Each suspending cowl has 2 sets of fixings. The inner set attach the chimney liner to the cowl, and the outer set attach the cowl to the chimney pot. It makes the installation a lot easier and quicker, and avoids replacing clay chimney pots. There are 2 models of suspending cowl available as follows:-

Anti Downdraught Suspending Cowl

The anti downdraught suspending cowl is the ultimate in suspending cowls, designed by us in connection with one of the leading chimney cowl manufacturers. They are all stainless steel, including the mesh, fixing straps and strap bands, so you can fit it and forget it. Available either with natural stainless steel finish or brown finish as shown. As well as preventing downdraught, you can also see from the images that these suspending cowls offer great protection from rain entering the chimney stack.

Suspending Cowl

The suspending cowl is also an all stainless steel construction. This model does not have anti downdraught properties, and will allow more rain into the chimney stack. It is also available in either natural stainless steel finish or brown finish as shown.

Fitting a chimney liner using a suspending cowl

The liner is installed by dropping it down through the chimney pot. The sleeve at the base of the suspending cowl slides inside the liner and incorporates straps for attaching the liner to the cowl. The cowl is then pushed onto the top of the chimney pot, and there is another set of straps on the suspending cowl for attaching the cowl to the pot.

Expensive ?
Initially the chimney liner suspending cowls look quite expensive. However, when you take into consideration the expense of doing the installation the traditional way, then they soon turn out to be excellent value. They are also of a really solid construction. A top quality product.

Competing Products
Check the images carefully online for seemingly equivalent products from competitors. You'll note the quality differences just from the images. Some don't even have a stainless steel mesh. An ordinary steel mesh with rot very quickly when used with a solid fuel appliance.

Where to Purchase
These can be purchased from the multi fuel chimney liner section online. Select the liner diameter here.
